Why are magnets used in feed mixers?
Metal fragments occasionally enter forage or animal feed during harvesting, storage and handling. Sharp metal objects swallowed by cattle can cause traumatic digestive injury, commonly known as hardware disease. Suitable magnetic separators installed in feed-handling systems help capture ferrous particles before feed is distributed.
How metal reaches feed
Wire, fragments of machinery and other litter can enter fields or storage areas and later become mixed into harvested forage. The original Persian article cites estimates of animal injuries and economic losses, but these figures need independent verification before being treated as established statistics.
Benefits of using magnets
- Removing some ferrous metal fragments from feed ingredients
- Reducing animal exposure to potentially dangerous sharp metal objects
- Supporting feed safety procedures and helping reduce some preventable veterinary risks
- Reducing avoidable interruptions associated with feed contamination
Important limitations
A magnet does not remove all kinds of foreign material or non-ferrous metals. Magnetic separation should therefore be combined with good harvesting practices, inspection of feed and equipment, regular cleaning and veterinary advice when required.
Choosing the right installation
Where compatible with the feed mixer, the magnetic device should be placed where it can effectively contact flowing feed and be cleaned safely. Confirm suitability, installation and maintenance with the equipment supplier.
