Livestock equipment: an overview
Modern equipment makes many daily tasks on livestock farms easier to manage. Common areas include feeding, watering, milking, ventilation, weighing and animal care. The equipment should be chosen according to the farm layout and animals being raised.
Equipment used on farms
- Cattle milking machines, liners and pulsators
- Feed batching and feed mixers for livestock and poultry
- Animal feed and water troughs, automatic waterers and hay racks
- Mechanical straw and grain feeders
- Livestock scales and measuring devices
- Farm fans, ventilation equipment and forage moisture meters
- Sheep shearing and other animal-care tools
Milking liners and pulsators
Milking liners directly contact the animal and require careful selection and maintenance. Their condition can influence milking performance and udder comfort. Long and short liners and different pulsator models are available, but worn parts must be replaced according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
Feeders and water troughs
Animals must be able to reach feed and water comfortably. Feeding troughs and waterers need dimensions appropriate to the species and size. The original Persian article gives an example of approximately 15 cm trough depth for sheep and mentions about 5–10 litres of daily drinking water, but actual needs vary with climate, animal size and feeding conditions.
Automatic waterers
Automatic drinkers can be installed inside or outside livestock buildings. Correctly installed systems can help provide regular access to clean water, reduce spillage and keep the bedding drier.
Milk cooling equipment
Milk cooling tanks store freshly collected milk at suitable temperatures before collection or transport. They are often manufactured from stainless steel and offered in different capacities. The system must be selected according to farm production and hygiene needs.
